the magic of one to one

Communication generally becomes more challenging for people as the dementia progresses and this is a particular challenge in the Lodge, our community for people living with the later stage of dementia. Our ability to experience emotions seems undiminished at those later stages, and we can communicate our love without words. The quiet presence of another person, the holding of a hand, a kiss, a massage. Just being together with another person lets us know we are not alone, that we matter, that we are safe and that we are loved.

The joy of singing and dancing…

They have now shown scientifically that the part of the brain that processes music is very resilient and stays with people even in the advanced stages of dementia. We have observed this for may years and it is one of the reasons that music is a very important part of life at the Lodge, our community for people with mid to late stage dementia. These pictures are from the Lodge today:

Family

We may have as many friends as we like, but there is a special place in our hearts for family.
