I didn’t know he liked dancing!

The truth is, he may not have enjoyed dancing before, or flower arranging, or making cup cakes. Or perhaps he did enjoy those things but did not have the opportunity. Reduction of inhibitions is sometimes associated with dementia and so people with dementia can often explore and enjoy new activities. These are not acts of regression, just an expression of living in the moment without the “normal” conventions of life, and following your passions at that time. This can of course be disconcerting for close family who have to adjust the way they view the person. But if we can let go of our expectations we will witness joy.
