Mum and my late father, Derrick Brand, had a large rhubarb patch in the garden of their bungalow in Selsey, Sussex. Mum used to prepare and freeze the crop for winter use.

She also made a beautiful garden bouquet arranged on a base of a large rhubarb leaf, enclosing, Rosemary for remembrance, runner beans, ivy and buddlea blossoms. My daughter, husband and I took this to lay at the ancient country churchyard where the three of us scattered my dad’s ashes.

Mum was a skilled home flower arranger until her abilities declined.
