Only 35 % of people with dementia in South West are diagnosed

A study undertaken by the Alzheimer’s Society has found that the South West has one of the lowest dementia diagnosis levels in the country. According to this study, in the South West only 35 % of people with dementia are diagnosed as such. Further details are here on the Alzheimer’s Society website.

Our comment: It is really important that people with dementia are diagnosed as such as early as possible, as this enables prescription of medication that may help to alleviate the symptoms, and so that good support arrangements can be put in place. The UK’s National dementia strategy lists early diagnosis as a priority. Our recommendation is that you talk with your GP as early as possible about a diagnosis, and ask about options for medication and support.
