Person-centred care
We will continue to develop our care towards a more person-centred model. Specifically:
- We will implement the use of the the JPA (Jackie Pool Associates) ‘pro-active’ tool for managing person-centred dementia care. This activity was originally planned for the latter half or 2010 and while some progress was made, systematic implementation was delayed due to a manager succession, and a surge of new residents joining Rose Lodge. Implementation of ‘pro-active’ will require us to develop our care plans along the lines of the JPA PAL (Pool Activity Level) instrument which allows us to determine the ‘activity level’ of each resident and to construct care plans appropriate to their activity level. While we already do this to a large extent, we believe there is value in using a recognised and respected tool for this purpose.
- We will do formal observations of resident’s well-being levels on a monthly basis (using a JPA tool). By asking members of the care team to formally observe resident’s wellbeing regularly we will improve their observations skills and develop their awareness of how good care practices have a very positive impact on the wellbeing of residents, so developing their own care practice.
- We will use the JPA tool for staff supervision. This tool provides feedback to carers about their person-centred care practice and this helps to develop their care practice.
- We will continue to develop our key worker system and encourage carers to develop rich relationships with residents and their families.THIS SECTION NEEDS DEVELOPMENT – changing key workers is inconsistent with developing deep relationships,
- We will provide bi-monthly in-house dementia care workshops to small groups of carers to stimulate reflection on care practice and discussion amongst the care team and so reinforce good care practices.
- For any staff enrolling in NVQ/QCFs, we will ask them to undertake a QCF which is specifically oriented towards dementia care.
- We will develop our induction process, with a named Senior Carer being responsible for making sure new staff adopt good care practices.
- We will arrange regular reviews of care plans with residents and their family. We will do this at least once a year, and more often if necessary.
