Dementia Awareness week 3 -9 July 2011

Dementia Awareness Week will take place from 3 – 9 July in England and Wales and 12 – 18 June 2011 in Northern Ireland.

To mark National Dementia week, Rose Lodge, East Devon’s dementia specialists, are launching a befriending scheme for people with dementia and their carers in Exmouth. Under this scheme, people with dementia are given the opportunity to get involved in some of the popular activities at Rose Lodge, such as the weekly drama class, and the Rose Lodge Ramblers that meet weekly for a good 2-hour week around the Devon Countryside. “Isolation is a real problem for people with dementia and their carers, and too often life can become a bit of a grind. Public services for people with dementia are very limited and so we are happy to be able to help and make some of our activities programme available to people in the community” says Karen Bousher, Manager at Rose Lodge. If you would like to participate in the scheme, please contact Karen at Rose Lodge on 01395 227071.

The theme for the week is ‘Remember the person’ and the focus for this week is on encouraging people to be a friend to someone with dementia. It is trying to take the fear out of dementia and make people realise that people living with dementia are just people. The Alzheimers Society have published a brochure which can be downloaded from here

Singing for the brain…

For a few years now, The Alzheimers Society has been running a fantastic scheme called ‘Singing for the brain’, where people with dementia and their carers come together regularly to sing. Until recently there was no such scheme in Exmouth, but recently a scheme was started, meeting at Brixington Community Church Hall, Churchill Road, in Exmouth (For further details contact Paul King on 01278 663 760) every Wednesday from 2 pm to 4 pm.  A few of the Rose Lodge residents really enjoy singing so we are supporting the scheme enthusiastically. Not only is there great singing but also the opportunity to meet with other people – and they serve some great teas and coffees.

The picture is from the pre-singing tea and biscuits today.

Genleman’s trip to the Marina this morning

We have a nice balance of men and women at Rose Lodge now and at times we do activities or outings that are of particular interest to the men. Today we thought we’d have a stroll around the Exmouth Marina which is quite busy with commercial and pleasure boats at this time of year.

Unfortunately we didn’t quite make it to the pub. At least we managed a cup of tea in the Marina Cafe,  Beach Pub next time!

Landshare day today…

The pupils from the Beacon School came for their bi-weekly vegetable growing day today. As usual they did a great job, making a new compost heap and turning the compost from the existing bin into the new bin. More digging and seeding of course and the vege garden is begininning to look quite lush after all the recent rain. For a treat, we let our chickens to free range for the day, and they quickly made a bee-line for the new compost heap! The weather was fanastic and so a lot of the residents came to have a look and comment on how well the children are doing!

Our second annual garden party today

For once, the weather forecast was accurate!
